Google News: Turning Chrome into Gaming Platform with Native Client

-

Turning Chrome into Gaming Platform is not a mere idea of Google. In fact, Google does turn it into Gaming Platform. Despite the fact that Google’s many detractors think it’s regressive, Google is quite confident of Native Client (NaCl) being “the ideal way of putting rich content and game engines in the browser.” Native Client is a technology that enables Chrome to run native compiled code across different operating systems. Even on December 8, Google hosted a special event at the Mountain View headquarters to prove its point.

In the event, Google displayed Native Client’s gaming expertise by showing off NaCl-based version of games such as Xbox 360 and PC game Bastion and Square and Enix’s multi-platform title Mini Ninjas. But the former is already available from the Chrome Web Store, with Mini Ninjas set to enter “an open beta in December without download.” Moreover, the Native Client product manager, Christian Stefansen, wrote in a blog saying that Native Client started supporting a set of core Pepper interfaces, suited for 2D graphics, audio, and compute-intensive applications in last September. In addition, Native Client has shipped additional APIs and capabilities since the release, which provides code with more of the capabilities available from JavaScript. He pointed out that those include hardware-accelerated 3D graphics via OpenGL ES 2.0, a full-screen API, a mouse lock API, and much more.

Then, Native Client ports make the web more accessible to thousands of application developers. The ports include Unity and Moai game engines, programming language environments Mono and Lua, audio middleware like fmod and Wwise as well as the Bullet physic engine. Nevertheless, many people within the browser industry are pretty sure that Google seems to be contrary with Native Client, including Chris Blizzard –the Mozilla’s director of web platforms. Blizzard said that Google’s Native Client approach is just another way of running compiled, platform-specific binary code in a Web browser ad it isn’t part of the standards-based Web as it’s locked to specific combinations of hardware and OSes. Blizzard added that Mozilla has a mission in ensuring that the open technologies of the Web provide all that’s needed to make Web apps interesting yet powerful and in seeing the need for native code use to lessen over time.

Lacking of Parental Controls, the Kindle Fire is Criticized

-

While some of us are still excited with the Kindle Fire, an awesome 7-inch multi-touch tablet computer from Amazon, there’s a thing or two that we should know about this tablet. Do you know that this inexpensive competitor to Apple’s iPad is criticized for lack of parental controls? The Kindle Fire’s lack of parental controls has been talked about these days. It’s something that parents have to take it seriously. Chances are they reconsider buying their kid a Kindle Fire which parental controls are at minimum level. Therefore, you should have the correct perspective about the issue to know what you should and shouldn’t worry about.

The complaints of lack of parental controls have surfaced in Amazon customer forums since the Kindle Fire started shipping last month. A parent blogger, Caryn Talty, said children could just as easily pull up and watch R-rated movies or a PG cartoon movie on the Kindle Fire if they’re not attended, not to mention use the tablet’s Silk web browser and stumble upon porn. The tablet doesn’t include enough parental controls which can block access to adult content, pornography, or allow unattended kids to notch up charges on their parents’ account. A similar complaint was posted by a Kindle Fire customer on an Amazon forum. This parent bought the tablet for an 11-year-old. But before handing it over to the kid, the parent played around with the tablet a little bit and typed in “Teen Fiction” and got results for teen porn within “three scrolls.” Parental controls should have been available to eliminate these sorts of items from showing up.

Another drawback of the Kindle Fire is that it allows anyone with physical access to the tablet to place purchases on the owner’s account, without having to input a password. Just imagine if your Kindle Fire was lost or stolen and someone could buy stuff using your money, unless you set a password to lock the screen when it isn’t in use. Although Amazon lets users require a password or PIN for in-app purchases, it’s about the extent of the parental controls on the tablet. Parents can attend their kids if they’re not comfortable allowing their kids to roam the Internet alone or they can hold off buying anything until Amazon makes it right.

Genius Bar to the Web with Answer Desk

-

I’m convinced that everybody who uses a computer knows what Microsoft Windows is. In fact, Microsoft Windows was released by Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational corporation that develops, manufacturers, licenses, and supports a wide range of products and services predominantly related to computing through its various product divisions. As time progresses, Microsoft Windows gets a lot better and improves in many ways. Today, we see and are able to enjoy new improvements of technology, features and services it has to make our lives more convenient and enjoyable with the help of computer. Recently, Microsoft develops the Genius Bar to the Web with Answer Desk.

Genius Bar to the Web with Answer Desk

This quietly launched new service is meant to help Windows and Office users get the most out of their PCs. But what is Answer Desk? Well, if you see the Answer Desks found in Microsoft’s retail stores that are in turn modeled on Apple’s successful Genius Bars, this is the online version of it. Answer Desk provides users with personalized consulting on their computer problems. This online Answer Desk consultation starts with a free chat, either online or over the phone, with an Answer Desk support rep. However, if you think it’s not quite enough to answer your questions or fix your faults, you can pay for $49 for an hour of one-on-one Windows or Office training. Not only that, you can also have an hour of Windows or Office troubleshooting for $99, two hours of virus removal and malware protection for $99, or two hours of PC performance tuning for $99 also. The good news is that these services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. But you need to schedule the training sessions in advance.

On the other hand, Microsoft’s step in and offer of high quality support to end-users suggests that existing OEM support avenues are not doing the job properly. At the hands of the OEMs, Windows and Office users are suffering poor support experiences. These poor experiences are creating damaged perceptions of Microsoft’s software. Although it’s quite harder to see why Microsoft should let the OEMs get away with providing a poor experience, but it’s understandable that Microsoft would want to improve its image to its customers.

This latest news from Microsoft about windows 8 app store “kill switch” has received negative response from many windows users. They believe that windows decision of “kill switch” is a bad move and will allow Microsoft to gain personal data from their computer and it will make Microsoft do whatever they want to kill the applications.
